Vegetable soup …

I feel like social media has already told me that soup season is back on again, but I don’t need the prompt to get my taste buds in the mood for the treat that is home made vegetable soup. I am particularly anticipating the next iteration of this fall favorite because Janet is using filet mignon that we had in the freezer. We just made the transition to Standard Time and the diminished light always triggers the impulse to cozy up, stay in and get comfortable. We have also moved into the official holiday season running from Thanksgiving into the delights of December (e.g., Hannukah, Christmas and New Years). From here on out, the evocation of delectable meals, time with loved ones, the giving of gifts, the displays of lights and promises of hope for peace on earth aggressively compete with the litanies of political hate and stories of grief that pervade the airwaves and push their way into our feeds.

This time of year feels more consequential because the interplay between light and darkness becomes so obvious and integral to our daily lives. It is easier to turn inward and explore the inner places that recede during the bright, warm and active months when we are drawn outside and into the natural world. Introspection can be valuable, but I know from experience that the inner journey is also fraught with depression, feelings of sadness, and a desire to self-isolate. There are a couple of tools that I collected over time to combat the dark that battles with the light at this time of year.

  • Family: interactions with your family members is incredibly important to mental health. My loving wife, Janet, keeps me sane to the best of her ability. Hearing from the girls and staying abreast of what’s happening with the grand kiddos is vital to combating darkish thoguhts.
  • Light: a few years back I acquired a light to help with seasonal affective disorder. Just a few minutes per day can really help keep you on the lighter side of things.
  • Pet: Not everyone has the good fortune of owning a pet, but there is no better solace than the love of an animal that thinks you are da bomb!
  • Vegetable soup: I will let this delicious meal stand in for all the wonderful things that happen during this season. It comes down to opening your heart and picking up your spoon.
